7 Major Causes of Skin Cancer

The following are the main causes.
1.Ultra-violet rays from the sun - the two associated with skin cancer are UVA (ultra-violet A) and UVB (ultra-violet B) rays. UVB rays are the shorter-wave solar rays and are more unlikely to cause skin reddening and sunburn. UVA rays, however, would have more permanent damages to the skin as they penetrate much deeper to the skin. Latest studies show that UVA not only increases UVB's cancer-causing effects, but may also directly cause skin diseases including melanomas.
2.Family History - recent research confirms that the risk of melanoma is more than double in people with a family history of skin cancer. Though having someone in the family with that history does not necessarily mean that you will get it too, it certainly warrants some extra attention because of the higher risk factor.
3.Chemical Exposure - some chemicals might cause harm when they come into contact with your skin. Insecticides, for instance, often contain substances like arsenic that are dangerous to the skin. They can increase the risk of non-melanoma skin cancer. Nevertheless, people working in environments in regular contact with chemicals and industrial materials (such as petroleum derivatives, arsenicals, and coal tar) are more likely to develop some type of skin cancer.
4.Smoking - whilst it is common knowledge that smoking is linked to other types of cancer such as mouth and lung cancers, the tobacco used in cigarettes etc could be a cause to developing skin cancer too.
5.Radiation Exposure - there are concerns that radiation therapy that some children undergo for other cancer treatments may increase the risk of developing a non-melanoma skin cancer. Also, people working with X-rays, including medical, nursing and radiographic personnel are subject to higher risks.
6.Skin Condition and Geography - certain skin conditions can increase a person's risk of developing skin cancer. For instance, people with light to fair skin living in tropical or subtropical climates, such as the American Southwest, equatorial Africa, Hawaii, and Australia, generally have very high incidences of skin cancer. Serious injuries to the skin, if not healed in time, could raise the chance for non-melanoma skin cancer. Likewise for scars from very bad burns.
7.Weak Immune System - the immune system is part of the body's defense against bacteria and cancerous formations. When the immune system is strong, the antibodies and immune cells are better able to do their job in neutralizing the free radicals and getting rid of the harmful elements from the body. Conversely, a weak immune system would open up a lot of possibilities as cancerous cells could spread out fast and divide in ways that are hard to predict.

The Lowdown on Skin Cancer

Skin is our largest organ and one that is not immune to developing cancerous cells. Skin cancer develops when damaged cells start growing and dividing uncontrollably in the skin. This form of cancer is the most prevalent with more than one million cases in the United States diagnosed each year. Here we will cover some of the commonly asked questions.
What Are The Different Forms of Skin Cancer?
There are different types of skin cancer with three forms accounting for almost all of the diagnosed cases. They are:
•Basal cell carcinoma (BCC):Accounting for nearly 80% of skin cancer, BCC develops in the basal cells which are located in the lowest layer of the epidermis. It is commonly found on areas of the body regularly exposed to the sun such as your face, head and upper body. Signs of BCC include skin that appears as a sore that repeatedly heals and re-opens, a slightly elevated pink growth, patch of irritated skin that is red in color and/or shiny translucent skin. This type of cancer does not commonly spread but should be treated to protect surrounding tissue.
•Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC):Found in the uppermost layers of the epidermis, SCC cancer affects squamous cells. Long term exposure to the sun can result in this form of cancer in middle to elderly aged individuals. The skin may appear to have an inflamed base with a crusty or scaly area over the base. While this cancer is most commonly found on areas of the body exposed to the sun, it can be found anywhere. Early detection and treatment can prevent this form of cancer from spreading.
Melanoma:The most dangerous and lethal form of skin cancer, this form accounts for only 4% of diagnosed cases. Melanoma readily spreads to other areas of your body such as your lymph system or other internal organs. Most commonly found in moles either pre-existing or new, melanoma has a 95% cure rate if caught in time for treatment. It is important that you are aware of any moles on your body and what they look like so you can spot changes in existing moles or the appearance of new moles. Undetected and untreated, melanoma becomes very difficult to treat and can result in death.
Who Gets Skin Cancer?

To be quite honest, anyone can get any type of cancer. There are however certain individuals who are at a higher risk than others. The following factors play a role in the likelihood of developing skin cancer:
•Individuals who are fair-skinned or burn easily.
•People who use tanning devices.
•Genetics or family history of the disease.
•Certain occupational exposures, i.e. coal tar, pitch, creosote, arsenic or radium.
•Excessive exposure to UV radiation.
Exposure to the sun is the leading cause of cancer which makes protecting your skin from sun exposure vitally important.
Can You Prevent Cancer?
Yes, you can take precautions that lower your risk of developing skin cancer. Take all effort to reduce your exposure to sun and other controllable risk factors. This includes wearing SPF 15 or higher sunscreen everyday in addition to sunglasses and brimmed hats to shield your face from the sun. If at all possible avoid exposing your skin to sunlight during the peak of the day (10am-4pm) and give up tanning beds as they can also damage your skin.

Striving For Skin Cancer Cures

More people are diagnosed with skin cancer in the United States than any other type of cancer. Survival rates are excellent if the condition is found and treated early in its development. Early treatment offers the best possible chances for skin cancer cures.Doctors define success in cancer treatment based on whether a person is alive and without signs of cancer after five years from the date on which they were diagnosed. The cure rate, also known as the five-year rate of survival, varies with the type of skin cancer with which a person is diagnosed.Individuals diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma, for instance, have the highest survival rate. This is because the cancer is so slow-growing and rarely spreads beyond the initial site. These persons can anticipate a treatment success rate of greater than 99 percent. In comparison, people who have had squamous cell carcinoma can anticipate a five-year survival rate of slightly more than 95 percent. Although this cancer is a nonmelanoma, and fairly slow growing, it can spread to the lymph nodes and blood if not treated early. If a person diagnosed with malignant melanoma is treated when the cancer is still in one location, the cure rate is about 88 percent. About eight in ten persons detect their cancer at this point. If the cancer has already begun to spread to lymph nodes, chances of survival are only about 58 percent. If the cancer has metastasized, or spread to other major body organs, about one in ten persons will be alive five years after diagnosis.Doctors use different treatments to attempt to cure people with skin cancer. Some cancers are more easily cured than others. Basal cell tumors, for example, are typically so small that a person is considered cured after the tumor is removed. Squamous cell cancer, however, may require additional treatment, especially if the cancer has spread. Chemotherapy and radiation are the most common forms of treatment.Because melanoma is so difficult to cure, physicians often rely on a combination of medications, radiation, chemotherapy, or other procedures that are undergoing clinical trials to attempt to cure this cancer. Some of these investigational treatments include photodynamic therapy and biological therapies.Diagnosing skin cancer early is extremely important. Skin cancer cures are most likely when the cancer is found early. Indeed, some doctors believe that more than 99 percent of all people who develop skin cancer can be cured if the cancer is discovered early and treatment is begun immediately.

3 Prominent Skin Cancer Risk Factors

Around 60,000 people contract skin cancer each year. It begins when your skin cells start to grow in a rapid and out of control way. This then leads to a malignant (cancerous) tumour forming on your skin. Whilst exposure to sunlight is the leading risk factor for this type of cancer there are others too. In this article I will be discussing three of the main skin cancer risk factors.
1) EXPOSURE TO ULTRAVIOLET (UV) LIGHT:As I mentioned above this is the main risk factor for this type of cancer. The reason for this is that UV rays cause damage to the DNA in your skin cells increasing the chances of cell division going wrong and cancer forming. Sunlight contains UV rays so prolonged exposure to the sun through spending a lot of time outdoors can increase your risk. Sunbeds and sunlamps also emit high doses of UV light and so make you more likely to develop this condition.
2) LIGHT SKIN:People who have light skin are more likely to develop skin cancer because their skin offers less protection from UV rays. Those with very light skin that goes red or freckles in the sun are most at risk, especially if they were heavily exposed to UV rays from an early age. Contrastingly people with dark skin are much less likely to develop this condition because their skin contains a melanin pigment which offers protection from UV rays.
3) GENETIC FACTORS:There are a number of genetic factors that can increase your chances of contracting this type of cancer. First, having two or more family members that developed skin cancer is thought to increase your risk. Secondly, having blonde or red hair makes you more likely to develop this disease. Thirdly, people with blue eyes are thought to be at a greater risk than those with other eye colours. Finally, people with a large number of freckles or moles on their skin are thought to have a greater chance of developing this cancer.
Unlike other cancers you have full control over many of the risk factors linked to skin cancer. Long term exposure to UV rays makes you more likely to develop this condition especially if you have light skin, blonde or red hair, blue eyes or lots of freckles and moles. Therefore, if you know you are going to be out in the sun for long periods take the necessary precautions by covering your skin and wearing sun cream. If your genetic features make you an even higher risk for this type of cancer then make sure you take shelter regularly and avoid prolonged exposure to UV rays when you can. If you take these precautions you should be able to reduce your skin cancer risk.Whilst every intention has been made to make this article accurate and informative, it is intended for general information only. Skin cancer is a very serious, life threatening condition and you should discuss any concerns, treatments or lifestyle changes fully with your doctor.

4 Steps to Skin Cancer Prevention

Is the population finally paying attention?
Skin cancer deaths have slowed down and our doctors say it is because we are paying more attention to to the possible cause. The National Institutes of Health indicates that skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. Basil and squamous cell carcinomas are the most often diagnosed forms of skin cancer, and while melanoma is less common, it is the most deadly. Pre-cancers appear in the form of actinic or solar keratosis, which, if left untreated, may develop into squamous cell carcinomas.
The skin cancer expert
If I have any expertise concerning skin cancer, it comes from nearly 30 years of dealing with it. Although I have lost count, I have had at least four squamous cell, one basil cell and four melanomas..That's the bad news. If you or a loved one has melanoma, then take heart. Current theory is that it results from exposure to harmful UV radiation from the Sun. Nearly 9000 people die every year from melanoma According to Cancer.com, a website developed by Ortho Biotech Products, Melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancers, accounted for about 68,720 cases of skin cancer in 2009 with about 8,650 melanoma deaths. Once melanoma cells reach the lymph nodes and have spread through the body, which happens if it is not caught soon enough, the usual cancer treatment regimen will begin. In the case of solar keratosis, this type can be removed through cryosurgery; that is, freezing it off with liquid nitrogen. This is a temporary measure as, in my case, these skin lesions return in a few month's time. A second treatment involves a very aggressive skin cream that actually devours the lesions and surrounding skin. Squamous cells and melanomas are removed surgically.
Preventative Measures
OK, so let's assume that our health care profession is partially correct in saying that UV radiation from the sun is the cause of skin cancer; there are preventative steps we can take--just in case they are right.
  1. When outdoors cover all exposed areas. A white "T" shirt is useless in this regard. To protect yourself from UV radiation, wear dark colored, tightly woven, lightweight fabrics. UV light easily penetrates loosely woven, light colored garments.
  2. If skin is exposed, lather-up with a good quality sun blocker with a protective factor of at least UPF 30
  3. Wear a broad-brimmed hat that protects the head, ears and neck.
  4. Re-examine your diet. Some cancers can be prevented by following a diet rich in vitamins, minerals and above all-anti-oxidants. And avoid or neutralize acidic foods.

Can Rooibos Prevent Skin Cancer?

It is used to make a caffeine-free herbal tea, sometimes called Red Tea, which is often touted for its health benefits. This article surveys some of the recent scientific studies surrounding rooibos, honeybush, skin cancer, and cancer in general.
Can topical use of rooibos in skin care products prevent skin cancer?
There is fairly strong evidence from studies on mice that suggests the topical use of rooibos may be useful for preventing skin cancer. A study on mice, with its results published in 2005, found that extracts of rooibos, honeybush, and green tea strongly inhibited the formation of skin tumors, when the mice were exposed to a chemical known to cause skin tumors. The study found that both rooibos and honeybush reduced the rate of tumor formation, and also greatly reduced the size of tumors that did form. These results suggest that rooibos and honeybush have benefits in terms of prevention of skin cancer, when included in skin care products and sunscreens.Although these results are promising, human studies have not yet been conducted, and little is known about the possible dosing necessary to achieve concrete benefits in terms of prevention of skin cancer.
Can drinking rooibos tea prevent skin cancer or other cancers?
There is significant scientific evidence suggesting that antioxidants in rooibos tea could prevent cancer, although the effects of rooibos tea on skin cancer in particular have not been studied yet. Skin cancer is the result of long-term damage caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Although only topical use of rooibos has been studied for protecting against UV radiation, there is evidence that drinking rooibos tea can protect against another form of radiation, gamma rays.Gamma rays are given off by some radioactive materials, and are one of the most damaging types of radiation, causing radiation sickness and cancer even when no visible burns are caused. Quite remarkably, a study on mice, feeding them rooibos tea, found that drinking rooibos tea resulted in significant protection against radiation damage caused by gamma rays. While it is not known whether these effects would translate to the damage caused by ultraviolet radiation, and whether or not it would translate into prevention of skin cancer in humans drinking rooibos, it does show that rooibos contains potent antioxidants which have the potential to prevent cancer caused by some forms of radiation damage.
Conclusions :
Rooibos tea is a delicious, caffeine-free beverage which is safe for regular consumption. Although little is known about whether drinking rooibos tea could actually prevent skin cancer, there is evidence that doing so can protect against certain kinds of radiation damage. There is stronger scientific evidence that the topical use of rooibos in sunscreens and skin care products can prevent skin cancer. Rooibos tea also has health benefits beyond those mentioned in this article. Drinking moderate amounts of rooibos tea certainly cannot hurt, and is likely a very good idea.

Types and Treatment for skin cancer

There is a direct link between skin cancer and sun exposure. It is usually found on areas of the body that are frequently exposed to sunlight. However, it can also develop in areas that are rarely exposed. For that reason, the skin all over your body should be examined regularly. There are three types of skin cancer, squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, and melanoma.Skin cancer can develop on the face, lips, ears, scalp, hands, palms, under your fingernails, between your toes, and anywhere on your body where you have skin. It can strike people of all skin tones and can develop slowly over time or appear suddenly. The most common type of is known as basal cell carcinoma. This is also the most easy to treat. It typically appears as a waxy bump on your skin or as a flat lesion that resembles a scar.Squamous cell carcinoma has more of a tendency to spread but is still easy to treat if it is caught early. This type of skin cancer appears as a firm red bump on your skin or as a flat lesion with a scaly surface.Melanoma can develop on your skin or cause an existing mole to become cancerous. Melanoma accounts for the most cancer related deaths. It appears as a brown spot on your skin that has an irregular color and jagged borders. Melanoma can also cause your mole to change shape or color; it may cause your mole to bleed. Melanoma lesions can also appear on mucous membranes inside your mouth and nose. You may have a higher risk of developing melanoma if you have fair skin, eyes and hair. Your risk is also higher if you sunburn or freckle easily. If you had multiple sunburns as a child or teen then your risk of developing skin cancer as an adult is greater. People who spend a lot of time in the sun working or tanning increase their risks if they do not wear protective clothing or use sun screen properly.Treatment for cancer is simple and effective if the cancer is caught early. The cancer is removed in a doctor's office under local anesthesia. The cancer is removed along with healthy tissue that surrounds it so no stray cancer cells are left behind. Surgery may be performed with a laser that directs a targeted beam of energy onto the cancer so it is destroyed. Laser surgery works well on surface cancers and on pre-cancerous growths.Mohs surgery is another type of treatment. This requires the surgeon to remove skin a layer at a time. Each layer is examined for cancer cells. In this manner the cancer cells can be removed without taking away too much healthy tissue. Some types of cancer can be killed by freezing them with liquid nitrogen. The cancer falls off as it thaws. Radiation and chemotherapy are also used in the treatment of skin cancer. Chemotherapy can be taken orally or applied directly to the skin cancer in the form of a cream or lotion.Skin cancer can be treated much easier while in the early stages. Therefore, frequent self-examinations and regular full body exams by your doctor are very important. You can also take steps to prevent skin cancer by being wise about sun exposure. Wear sunscreen even in the winter and avoid the sun during the peak hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Treatment Options For Skin Cancer

Most people are unable to treat skin cancer on time because they do not come to know that they have skin cancer. Certain outgrowths, moles and discoloration on the skin are taken as normal skin problems. When someone is confirmed about his or her illness related to skin cancer, the panic starts. However, there is absolutely no need to panic about skin cancer as there are a lot of treatments available.First and foremost, you need to speak to your skin doctor to determine the actual problem you are suffering from. Your physicians would like to take details regarding a lot of events related to you such as your age, medical history, extent of the disease, tolerance for a certain medication, therapy or procedure and your overall opinion for the problem that exists. There are many treatment options available for skin cancer. Here is a list of some great treatment options which will be considered:
a) Surgery
b) Radiation therapy
c) Electrochemo therapy
d) Immunotherapy
e) Hyperthermia
f) Photodynamic therapy
g) Nutritional therapy
h) Pain management
i) Naturopathy
j) Psycho-neuroimmunology
k) Spiritual support therapy
l) Biological therapy
Let us discuss the therapies mentioned above in detail:
a) Surgery
Surgery is the oldest existing form of treatment for skin cancer. The treatment eliminates the tumor as well as certain adjacent healthy tissues. This stops the cancer from spreading further. Some doctors also use skin peel such as the TCA skin peel that has been quite effective in treating skin cancer. There are different types of surgeries used to treat skin cancer such as cryosurgery, electro-desiccation and curettage, grafting, laser therapy, Mohs micrographic surgery, simple excision. Cryosurgery is used to freeze the tumor. This helps in exterminating cancer cells. Electro-desiccation and curettage burns the lesion and eliminates it with a sharp instrument. Grafting is another type of surgery where a skin graft is used to replace damaged skin while removing the cancer. The Mohs micrographic surgery is helpful in removing the cancer. A microscope is used to inspect the cancerous area in order to ensure that none of the cancer cells are present. The process of simple excision cutting the cancer from the skin and some of the healthy tissue round it.
b) Radiation therapy
This is a therapy that emits X-rays in order to exterminate cancer cells and also to shrink tumors. The therapy is conducted with the help of a radiation machine. It can be applied to any part of the body successfully to get good results.
c) Electro-chemotherapy
This therapy uses a combination of chemotherapy as well as electrical pulses in order to treat cancer.
d) Chemotherapy
This therapy for skin cancer treats by providing several cancer fighting drugs in the body. These drugs tend to exterminate cancer cells via hampering their development and regeneration.
e) Immunotherapy
It treats skin cancer via enhancing the immune system of the body with certain doses of tumor vaccines, interferon-Alfa and interleukins-2.
f) Photo-dynamic therapy
It is a new cancer therapy. An injection of photofrin is given to the patient once the cancer cell is subject to a laser beam.

3 Effective Skin Cancer Treatments

Skin cancer is contracted by approximately 60,000 people in the UK each year. It is normally caused by prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light which makes the process of cell division in your skin malfunction. As a result your skin cells start to multiply in a rapid, out of control way leading to the formation of a cancerous tumour which usually appears as a blemish on your skin. Fortunately, most of these cancers are very treatable if caught in the early stages. In this article I am going to be discussing three of the possible skin cancer treatments that are available to you.
1. SURGERY:This is the most common treatment for this type of cancer. Smaller tumours can normally be removed under local anaesthetic. However, larger tumours may require a skin graft which involves the cancerous skin being removed and then replaced with a layer of healthy skin taken from another part of the body. If the cancer has spread beyond the skin and to the lymph nodes (glands that help the body get rid of unwanted bacteria) they may also have to be removed through surgery. This type of treatment has few side effects but may result in some permanent scarring of the skin depending upon the size and position of the tumour.
2.RADIOTHERAPY:This type of treatment involves using high energy radiation beams to shrink or kill any cancerous cells. It is normally used as an alternative to surgery as it can treat the skin cancer without any scarring. Radiotherapy may also be used following surgery to kill any remaining cancer cells and reduce the chances of the cancer returning.
3.CRYOTHERAPY:This type of treatment involves freezing the cancerous cells using liquid nitrogen. It is most effective for early stage skin cancers and may not be possible with more advanced cancers. If this treatment is used the affected skin will scab over and after about a month this scab will fall off. Although skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK it is highly treatable with the success rates being particularly high if it is discovered in the early stages. Skin cancer is a very serious, life threatening condition and you should discuss any concerns, treatments or lifestyle changes fully with your doctor.

Preventing and Controlling Skin Cancer

Cancer is becoming more and more prevalent around the world and skin cancer is the most common form. There are two types of skin cancer that are seen the most often - squamous cell and basal cell - and both of them have a high rate of success in curing. There is a third type of skin cancer - melanoma - and it is the most dangerous of all, especially to the younger generations. Why? Because 65 to 90 percent of all melanomas are caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light. In 2004 alone.which is the most current statistics available - 50,039 people in the United States alone were diagnosed with some form of melanoma skin cancer. Medical organizations and the government do not track incidences for basal cell and squamous cell skin cancer so the number of people in the United States that were diagnosed with a form of skin cancer is probably higher.Prevention and control for skin cancer is not just determined by what you do to protect yourself. Some people are more prone to the development of skin cancer than others. Risk factors can include, but are not limited to:
1. Skin coloring that is light in natures
2. Family history of skin cancer
3. Personal history of skin cancer
4. Exposure to the sun through playing or through the person's job
5. History of sunburns during childhood
6. Skin that burns, reddens easily, freckles, or hurts when exposed to sunlight
7. People with blue or green eyes
8. People with blonde or red hair
9. People who have a specific type of mole in large quantities over their body.
If you find that you fall into any of these risk factors then prevention and control for skin cancer should become a way of life for you. Prevention and control for skin cancer is actually very easy and just requires getting used to using sun-protective practices on a daily basis. It is very easy and here are a few things that medical professionals and governmental organizations recommend for safe outdoor protection from UV rays:As our ozone layer is thinning, more UVA and UVB rays get through making prevention and control for skin cancer even more important.
  1. Seek a shady spot or go indoors between the hours of 10am and 4pm on a sunny day. This is when the UV rays from the sun hit the Earth the hardest and can do the most damage to your skin. As our ozone layer is thinning, more UVA and UVB rays get through making prevention and control for skin cancer even more important.
  2. If you need to be outside during those hours, cover up any exposed skin with clothing. Clothing provides a barrier between your skin and the rays. Wearing white also helps as white reflects sunlight and heat.
  3. Wear a hat with a wide brim to protect you face, head, ears, and neck from the sunlight. A baseball cap will leave areas exposed.
  4. Get a pair of sunglasses that wrap around your eyes as much as possible and blocks out UVA and UVB rays. Look for a pair that blocks these rays close to 100%.
  5. Wear sunscreen that is rated SPF 15 or higher and also blocks UVA and UVB rays. Even if you are just running out to the store, rubbing some sun block on your face, neck, arms and hands will go a long way to protecting you from harmful radiation.
When you use a combination of all these methods as prevention and control for skin cancer, you are giving yourself a better chance of not being stricken with it. If you are serious about the prevention and control for skin cancer for yourself, stay away from the tanning beds. Everyone claims they are safer, but it still takes UV rays to give your body that golden look. Even if those UV rays are manmade, they can still cause skin cancer.

What Is Basal Cell Carcinoma Skin Cancer?

A basal cell carcinoma skin cancer is the result of sun damage to the skin. The cancer tends to enlarge in a slow and steady pattern. Sometimes, the skin works towards healing once the biopsy is done as it starts growing over the cancer. Now, this does not indicate that the cancer is gone. It just means that the cancer is covered with a layer of skin. In case, the cancer is not eliminated completely, it can get deep in to the skin and results in greater harm.Basal cell carcinoma skin cancer is the most common type of cancer existing in the world. This cancer can be quite destructive and even disfiguring. It consists of the risk of developing serious skin problems.People with family history of basal cell carcinoma skin cancer are more vulnerable to developing this disease. The disease is not life threatening. However, if left untreated, the disease can disfigure the skin, results in bleeding and even result in local destruction in areas such as eye, ear, nose and lip. There are several types of basal cell carcinoma skin cancer as mentioned below:
a) Nodular
This appears as flesh colored papule with telangiectasis. In case, it becomes ulcerates, it
results in 'rodent ulcer'. It is an ulcerating nodule with a pearly border.
b) Cystic
This is a rare type of basal cell carcinoma skin cancer and very difficult to distinguish from the nodular type. It has a cavity in the centre with fluid.
c) Pigmented
This is another variant of the nodular type of basal cell carcinoma skin cancer. This should not confuse with melanoma.
d) Sclerosing
It is a scar like lesion.
e) Superficial
This type of basal cell carcinoma skin cancer appears as a red scaling patch.
Basal cell carcinoma skin cancer may look different from normal skin. It may also appear as skin bump or a growth that looks pearly, waxy, white, light pink, flesh colored, brown or even flat.
Here are some symptoms of basal cell carcinoma skin cancer:
1. A skin sore that may bleed easily
2. A sore that does not heal properly
3. Sore with crusting or oozing spots
4. Sore just like a scar without an injured area.
5. Irregular blood vessels around the spot

What Are The Causes And Effects Of Skin Cancer

Like all cancers, skin cancer is caused when the cells are exposed to some external environmental condition. An oncogene promotes tumor growth. In many cases of cancer it is not always clear what the environmental condition or conditions may be. In the case of skin cancer, the environmental condition is thought to be exposure to ultraviolet radiation. And the most common source of ultraviolet radiation that most people are exposed to is sunlight. However, some people can be exposed to sunlight more than others and never appear to develop skin cancers. It seems that some people are more sensitive to the ultraviolet radiation than others (although too much exposure to the sun will result in skin cancer for most people eventually). Melanin is the body's natural defense against the sun. It turns the skin brown as a way prevent it from burning. This is the tan that many people cultivate.People with low amounts of melanin will have paler skin. The skin will most likely turn red rather than brown and will burn before it tans (if it tans at all) depending on the melanin level. This is fair common knowledge to most people. Basal cell carcinoma is the most common form of skin cancer. It may be raised from the skin or flat to begin with. It generally doesn't spread and is considered to be a benign cancer. It can appear anywhere on the body but mainly on areas that are directly exposed to the sunlight.Squamous cell carcinoma is another form of skin cancer that is normally found on parts of the body that are exposed to sunlight. Again, it does not always spread from the original location but is more likely to spread than basal cell. If it does spread it will normally only spread to surrounding cells. So if it is on the surface of the skin you will notice a mark that is brown or red that starts to get larger over time.Melanoma are the third type of skin cancer. They are the most serious and rarest form of skin cancer. They can appear anywhere on the body and are not uncommon in parts of the body that are not normally exposed to the sun, like the feet. This means it will interfere with surrounding tissues and organs to the extent that it destroys them or stops them functioning properly.Depending on where the cancer spreads or metastasizes this can be extremely hard to treat and potentially life threatening.Limiting your exposure to sunlight and other forms of ultraviolet radiation is the best preventative care you can take. Getting your skin checked out from time to time by your doctor is also a good idea. This is especially good advice if you notice any new or unusual moles or spots on your skin.

Prevent Colon Cancer With 5 Easy Ways

Research studies are now going on how best to prevent colon cancer as more and more people are diagnosed with this condition today. It is found that colon cancer usually starts in the large intestine, also known as colon, or the rectum. Colon cancer then develops from dead cells that have been accumulated in a lump over a period of time. The risk to getting colon cancer increases if you have a genetic medical background of parents or close relatives who have been diagnosed with colon cancer. Research also showed that that colon cancer is aggravated by unhealthy diets such as ready meals and fast food.Hence, it is vital that you seek the advice of your doctor should you feel the discomfort of colon cancer symptoms. The symptoms to look out for include unhealthy bowel occurrence such as diarrhea, constipation or bowel infection, severe pain in abdomen, blood in the stools, narrow stools, anemia, intestinal obstruction and drastic loss of weight.Prevention is still better than cure. So you really should consider the following 5 ways on how best to prevent colon cancer:
  1. Adopt healthy habits. Colon cancer usually develops over a length of period before it actually shows. Hence you should not wait till you notice the symptoms of colon cancer before starting to adopt healthy habits. Eat healthy meals, exercise and have an adequate amount of sleep. If your diet contains too much high fat and red meats with little fiber, you are definitely at a high risk of developing colon cancer. Fat accumulates on the walls of the intestine and rectum, forming lumps of dead cells. You should therefore adopt a balanced natural diet which includes lots of green vegetables, fruits and water.
  2. Exercise helps by flushing out harmful toxins and waste matter which if left accumulated in your body can cause cancerous growth.
  3. Know your family medical history. It appears that colon cancer is a genetic disease that is hereditary. As such, if you belong to the high risk category due to your family history, then you should take extra precautions by leading a healthy lifestyle.
  4. Stop smoking. Chain smoking increases your chance to developing colon cancer. Inhaling tobacco can easily transfer carcinogen (a cancer agent) to your colon and rectum, thus resulting in colon cancer. Hence, do not hesitate to find ways to quit smoking.
  5. Reduce exposure to radiation. Excessive exposure to radiation has been found to cause colon cancer. Radiation rays are harmful and can render healthy normal cells abnormal. By all means, avoid unnecessary X-rays, CT scans, mammograms so that you can best prevent colon cancer. If you observe that you are experiencing symptoms like skin allergies, weak immune system, poor movement of bowels, bloating, etc, then it may be that you have too much toxins in your body. Consider colon cleansing as a way of detoxification. There are a couple of ways to perform colon cleansing. These include consuming herbs for colon cleansing and colon hydrotherapy.

What Is Squamous Cell Skin Carcinoma Skin Cancer?

A squamous cell carcinoma skin cancer is a type of skin cancer that usually results from a long term sun damage or exposure to ultra-violet rays to the skin. Squamous cell carcinoma skin cancer spreads gradually and also has the capacity to spread to tissues near the affected area such as the eye. The cancer can also spread to distant parts of the body in case, it is not treated on time. The best and the only way to make sure if a skin growth is cancerous is to go for a biopsy. The process involves removal of a small section of the skin. Thereafter a pathologist analyzes it under the microscope in a medical laboratory.Remember that a biopsy is not a process to remove cancer. It just works towards taking off the tip of the cancer. In some cases the skin tends to heal once the biopsy is done as it grows over the cancer. However, this does not indicate that the cancer is removed completely. Here, the cancer is only covered with a blanket of skin. In case, the cancer is not removed fully, it can get deeper in to the skin and even metastasize to the internal organs of the body resulting in death of a human being.Squamous cell carcinoma skin cancer is known to be one of the most common forms of skin cancer. It is shocking but true that over 25,000 new cases have been reported in a year in the United States alone. The cancer originates from the squamous cells that are most of the portion of the upper layer of the skin. All cases of squamous cell carcinoma skin cancer are not serious. If detected early and treated promptly, one can easily survive this disease. However, if not treated properly, the disease can prove to be very hard to treat and can even result in disfigurement. There are several causes of the origination of squamous cell carcinoma skin cancer. Some of these include the following:
  1. Frequent and long exposure to harmful sun rays. This result in severe skin damage and ultimately develop in to squamous cell carcinoma skin cancer.
  2. The damage to the skin done by sun is the most responsible factor for development of this type of cancer. The face is most exposed to sun and the cancer spreads to the other parts of the body.
  3. Light skinned people have greater risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma skin cancer.
  4. People who have already developed this cancer are said to develop more.
Chronic exposure to the sun is the main cause of this type of cancer. The tumor invades to body parts such as face, neck, bald scalp, hands, shoulders, arms and back that are more exposed to sun. The lower lip and the rim of the ear are more vulnerable to these cancers.Squamous cell carcinoma skin cancer may also develop due to certain types of injury such as scars, burns, long existing sores, sites exposed to X-rays or some harmful chemicals, such as arsenic of by-products of petroleum. Reduced immunity is also one of the main reasons for the spread of this type of cancer. Detect and treat early to stay away from possible damage and full recovery.

New Approach Prevents Skin Cancer Using Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)

Every year there are more new cases of skin cancer than breast, prostate, lung and colon cancers combined. One in 5 Americans will get skin cancer in their lifetime. 90% of skin cancers are caused by excessive sun exposure, yet fewer than 33 percent of adults, adolescents, and children routinely use sun protection.Cancer prevention and early detection techniques could eliminate up to 100,000 cancer cases and 60,000 US cancer deaths each year. The effects of chronic sun exposure result in superficial sun spots that are visible and also invisible changes that occur under the skin's surface. Ultraviolet photography and photodynamic therapy (PDT) are two recent developments that should help in the early detection and treatment of both types of pre-cancerous skin lesions.Early Detection with UV Photography Ultraviolet (UV) photography offers a very useful screening tool to help the skilled physician detect sun damaged skin that may not be visible upon a routine examination. Visual inspection can only detect changes on the skin's surface, but damage due to sun exposure occurs beneath the outer layer of skin,The UV camera briefly shines ultraviolet light on the face. UV light is able to penetrate 1.5-2.0 millimeters under the visible dead layer of skin and focus on the actual living portion where sun damage originates. The advantage to the doctor and the patient is that this technology allows for much earlier detection of skin problems before they develop into pre-cancers that are visible on the skins surface. After finishing the treatment plan, the doctor should take another UV photo to verify the treatment efficacy. UV photography also helps evaluate other skin conditions including acne, oil balance, hydration, inflammation, growths, fungi, pH, and thin skin due to reduced collagen which makes it an ideal tool to evaluate all problem skin. After the damage to the deeper layers of skin, superficial signs of sun damage may eventually appear on the surface. It is estimated that 10-20% of untreated AKs will develop into squamous cell cancers. If treated early, almost all AKs can be eliminated without becoming skin cancers. If you have AKs, it indicates that you have sustained sun damage and have a higher risk for developing all types of skin cancer - not just squamous cell carcinoma.People may also have up to 10 times as many subclinical (invisible) lesions as visible, surface lesions. Treatment options The most common treatment options for AKs have traditionally involved topical pointment 5-FU (Effudex), laser resurfacing, or chemical peels. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is the treatment of choice for the invisible deeper sun damage as well as the visible pre-cancerous AK lesions. This treatment cleared 100% of the AKs in 2/3 of the patients after one treatment. The second step of PDT is to apply a concentrated light source to activate the chemical reaction which destroys the abnormal cells. Since the solution is absorbed only in the damaged cells, the healthy cells are not affected. This process can cause a mild burning sensation during the treatment. Following the treatment, most patients experience mild swelling, redness, and a peeling of the AK lesions and the surrounding tissue. In addition to eliminating AKs and the subsurface skin damage, PDT has also been effective in improving the appearance of the skin by greatly reducing moderate to severe acne (including cystic acne), reducing color splotches, lessening the fine lines, and decreasing pore size.

Skin Cancer and Who is Most at Risk?

If you have read a newspaper or listened to the news over the last few years, then you will know that there are always constant warnings telling us to protect our skin against skin cancer. Whilst many people do listen to these warnings, there are still a shocking amount of people who still ignore them.
Skin Cancer and its Various Forms
Skin cancer is not as rare as some people think that it is. Whilst it is true that staying in the sun unprotected for a little amount of time, rarely leads to skin cancer, it still can occur. There are different forms of skin cancer, though some are extremely rare. The three most common types of skin cancer include:
Melanoma

This is less common than the other two types of skin cancer, though it can be a lot more serious. It develops from the melanocytes in the skin and is usually seen as a pigmented lesion with an irregular shape in the skin. If treated early, the good news is that this type of cancer has a very high cure rate, so get to the doctors as soon as possible for your best chance of recovery!
Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Often occurring in the hands, lower lip, and the forehead, this type of cancer appears as a red bump or an ulceration of the skin which does not heal. The cancer if left untreated can spread to lymph nodes within the affected area.
Basal Cell Carcinoma
Usually the cancer is found on areas of the body which have had excessive sun exposure. This type of skin cancer does not usually spread to other parts of the body, and will only spread to the skin around the actual cancer.
Overall, Basal Cell Carcinoma is the most common skin cancer but it is not the most serious. Usually people with fair skin are more at risk than others of contracting the cancer, especially people with freckles. Obviously, the longer you expose your skin to the sun without sufficient protection, the more at risk you are of developing skin cancer.
How to Prevent Yourself from Getting Skin Cancer and the Treatments Available
It is really easy to protect yourself against skin cancer, so really there is no excuse for not preventing it. Using an adequate amount of sun protection lotion is a must, and unfortunately many people simply do not bother with it. Generally, children and people with fair skin need to be using a higher protection factor than other people. People with darker skin do not tend to get skin cancer as often as people with lighter skin so they do not need a high factor sun lotion.
Sunbeds are also a cause of skin cancer, though cases are rare. Applying lotion to the ears, nose and neck will help to protect those sensitive areas from the sun.If caught early, most skin cancer can be cured. There are various forms of treatment for skin cancer including surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The treatment which you will receive depends upon your age, health and the size of the cancer.
